What is love bombing?
Love bombing is flooding a new partner with attention, compliments, gifts and promises in order to create fast attachment and, with it, control. It feels wonderful at first. The sign that separates it from honest enthusiasm is what happens when you slow down or say no.
What it looks like
Any one of these can be innocent. The pattern is what counts.
- Declarations of love within days, and talk of a shared future within weeks.
- Constant messages and a wish to spend every free hour together.
- Extravagant gifts or gestures that create a sense of debt.
- Impatience or hurt when you see friends or ask for time.
- Sudden coldness when you set a limit, followed by more intensity.
Love bombing or a man who is simply keen
Enthusiasm respects your pace. If you say you would like to go slower, a man who is merely delighted with you says of course, and means it. Love bombing treats your hesitation as an obstacle.
The other test is time. Real interest stays level. Love bombing is usually followed by withdrawal or criticism once you are attached, and the warmth returns only when you comply.
What to do if you recognise it
Slow down on purpose and watch the reaction. Keep seeing the people who know you; they often notice first. If you feel pressured, frightened or cut off, talk to someone you trust or to a domestic abuse helpline in your country. You do not need proof to ask for advice.
Questions and answers
- What does love bombing mean?
- Overwhelming someone with affection and attention at the start of a relationship in order to make them dependent and easier to control.
- Is love bombing always deliberate?
- No. Some people do it out of insecurity without a plan. The effect on the other person is the same, and the response is the same: slow down and see what happens.
- How long does love bombing last?
- Usually weeks to a few months, until the other person is committed. It is often followed by a phase of devaluation.
