What is enemies to lovers?
Enemies to lovers is a romance trope in which two characters begin as opponents and end as a couple. The attraction is there from the first argument; the story is how long they can deny it. It is the oldest trick in the genre, and "Pride and Prejudice" is its model.

How it works
The two start with a reason to dislike each other: rival families, competing ambitions, a bad first impression. The plot forces them together. Each discovers that the other is not what they assumed, and the energy of the conflict turns into something else without losing any force.
Why readers love it
An enemy pays attention. He studies her, remembers what she said, and takes her seriously as an opponent long before he admits anything else. By the time they fall, they already know each other's worst sides, so the love is not built on illusion.
The arguments are also the flirting. Sharp dialogue is the pleasure of the trope.
What makes it good
Readers are strict about a few points.
- The dislike has a real cause, not a misunderstanding a text could clear up.
- They are equals. Neither is simply cruel to the other.
- The turn is earned through action, not a sudden change of heart.
- The banter survives the kiss.
