What is aftercare?
Aftercare is the attention partners give each other after sex or an intense scene: holding, talking, water, a blanket, quiet. The term comes from the kink community, where it is considered part of the scene. It applies to any kind of intimacy, because the minutes afterwards decide how the whole thing is remembered.

What aftercare looks like
It differs from person to person. Common forms:
- Staying close and holding each other.
- Water, something sweet, a warm cover.
- Saying what you enjoyed, and praise.
- Quiet, with no phones.
- A message the next day to ask how the other feels.
Why it matters
Intensity is followed by a drop. The body comes down from adrenaline and closeness, and people can feel raw or unexpectedly sad. Being looked after in that moment turns it into warmth. Being left alone can turn a good experience into a bad memory.
It also builds trust. Knowing that you will be cared for afterwards is what makes it possible to let go before.
How to ask for it
Say beforehand what you need afterwards: to be held, to talk, or to be left in peace for ten minutes. Ask your partner the same. People who lead need aftercare too, and often forget to mention it.
